Drs. Alward and Fingert delivered Raine lectures at the University of Western Australia in Perth as well as at the state conference of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, which was held in Kalgoorlie September 5th through 7th.
Dr. David Mackey – long-time collaborator with the UI Glaucoma Service faculty and Lions Eye Institute Director at the University of Western Australia – was a visiting lecturer at the University of Iowa in the 1980's and has collaborated with many UI faculty ever since. While visiting the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, Dr. Mackey discovered that, before becoming president, Herbert Hoover was a mine manager at Leonora near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Drs. Alward and Fingert stayed at the Herbert Hoover House built by Hoover in the 1890's and now being run as a B&B. The story from the UWA newsletter is available here as a pdf.
